What is this test?
Zinc is a trace element involved in immune function, wound healing, taste and many enzymes. Blood levels vary with meals, time of day, inflammation and sample contamination.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate suspected deficiency due to diet, malabsorption or compatible symptoms.
- To monitor medically supervised zinc replacement.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
The laboratory may request a morning fasting sample and a trace-element tube. Report supplements, but do not stop them unless instructed.
How should you understand the result?
A low serum value can occur during inflammation and does not always prove body deficiency. Diet, symptoms and repeat testing may matter.
