Explained in plain language

What is this test?

TIBC estimates how much iron the blood protein transferrin could carry. Combined with serum iron, it is used to calculate transferrin saturation.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate iron deficiency or iron overload with other iron studies.
  • To clarify anaemia when ferritin or serum iron alone is difficult to interpret.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.

How should you understand the result?

Inflammation, liver disease, pregnancy and nutrition can alter transferrin and TIBC. It should be interpreted with iron, ferritin and the CBC.
