What is this test?
NT-proBNP is released when the heart walls are under increased stretch. It helps assess possible heart failure and can also be used to follow an established condition.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate breathlessness, swelling or other symptoms that could be due to heart failure.
- To help assess severity or monitor a known heart-failure condition.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
No special fasting is usually needed. Sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion or collapse requires urgent medical care.
How should you understand the result?
A low value can make heart failure less likely in the right setting, while a high value is not specific. Age, kidney function, heart rhythm, body size and acute illness affect interpretation.
