Explained in plain language

What is this test?

Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme found mainly in bile ducts and bone. Levels can also be physiologically higher during growth and pregnancy.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate a liver-test pattern suggesting impaired bile flow.
  • To assess selected bone or mineral concerns.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.

How should you understand the result?

GGT and other tests help judge whether a rise is more likely from liver or bone. Age, pregnancy and recent bone healing affect interpretation.
