What is this test?
This blood test measures specific IgE antibodies to a whole egg. It shows whether the immune system is sensitized to that allergen.
Why might it be ordered?
- For symptoms that occur after possible exposure to a whole egg.
- When skin testing is not appropriate or the allergist needs additional information.
What sample is needed?
A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
Fasting is usually not required. Describe your symptoms, the likely exposure and how soon the symptoms began. Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How should you understand the result?
Detectable specific IgE means sensitization, but does not prove that the allergen is causing actual symptoms. A higher value does not reliably predict how severe the reaction would be.
