What does this test include?
This panel combines chemical urinalysis with microscopic examination of urine sediment. It can assess concentration, pH, protein, glucose, blood and other strip findings, then look for cells, casts, crystals and microorganisms under the microscope.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate urinary symptoms, kidney concerns or an abnormal screening strip.
- For monitoring during pregnancy or a condition that can affect the kidneys or urinary tract.
What sample is needed?
A fresh, clean-catch midstream urine sample is commonly preferred. Use a sterile container and follow the laboratory instructions.
How should you prepare?
Clean the area as instructed, begin urinating into the toilet, then collect the middle part without touching the inside of the container. Deliver promptly and report menstruation or contamination.
How are the results reported?
The chemical and microscopic findings should be read together. A result suggesting bacteria does not automatically diagnose a urinary infection; symptoms and sometimes a urine culture are needed.
