Explained in plain language

What is this test?

A trained professional examines the size, shape, colour and appearance of red blood cells on a blood film. The pattern can help clarify anaemia and some inherited or acquired blood disorders.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate anaemia or unusual red-cell indices on a CBC.
  • To look for cell-shape patterns that may guide additional tests.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Fasting is usually unnecessary. Bring previous blood-count results if the test is being used to follow a change.

How should you understand the result?

Morphology terms describe what was seen under the microscope; they are not diagnoses by themselves. The report is interpreted with haemoglobin, red-cell indices, iron studies and clinical history.
