Explained in plain language

What is this test?

Fecal calprotectin is a protein from inflammatory cells that is measured in feces and indicates the presence of inflammation in the gut.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To distinguish between inflammatory bowel disease and functional complaints such as irritable bowel syndrome.
  • To monitor inflammatory activity in already established intestinal disease.

What sample is needed?

A small amount of faeces is given in a clean container as directed. Do not mix with urine, water or detergents.

How should you prepare?

Fasting is usually not required. Report any recent gastrointestinal infection and all medicines, including anti-inflammatory drugs; do not stop them unless instructed.

How should you understand the result?

Elevation indicates intestinal inflammation, but does not determine the cause. Infection, medications, polyps, and other conditions can also raise it.
