What does this test include?

This serology test measures IgM and IgG antibodies. It assesses the immune response in blood rather than directly detecting the organism and does not establish a diagnosis by itself.

Why might it be ordered?

  • If specifically ordered, to discuss the result together with symptoms and more appropriate HSV tests.
  • As an adjunct to clinical assessment, recognising that IgM does not reliably establish HSV type or timing.

What sample is needed?

Serology normally uses a blood specimen. Confirm the exact material and whether other markers should be measured at the same time.

How should you prepare?

Special dietary preparation is usually unnecessary. Follow laboratory instructions and report treatment, symptoms, and the possible exposure date.

How are the results reported?

IgM and IgG are reported separately. HSV IgM is not type-specific, may react during a recurrent episode, and does not prove recent infection. IgG indicates exposure but does not establish when or where infection occurred.
