Explained in plain language

What is this test?

Fibrinogen is a liver-made protein converted to fibrin during clot formation. It also rises as part of the inflammatory response.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate bleeding, widespread clotting activation or an abnormal coagulation result.
  • To monitor selected inflammatory or liver-related conditions when requested.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Fasting is usually not the key requirement. Report anticoagulants, recent bleeding, pregnancy, infection and inflammation.

How should you understand the result?

A low value can increase bleeding risk, while a high value is nonspecific and may reflect inflammation, pregnancy or other factors. It does not diagnose a clot.
