What is this test?
This test looks for antibodies that react with red blood cells. It supports transfusion-compatibility assessment and evaluation of selected immune reactions.
Why might it be ordered?
- Before transfusion or after a previous transfusion reaction.
- During pregnancy when requested by the supervising clinician.
- When antibodies against a person's own or donor red cells are suspected.
What sample is needed?
A blood specimen is used. Testing may involve an antibody screen followed by identification; confirm the requested scope with the laboratory.
How should you prepare?
Special dietary preparation is usually unnecessary. Report pregnancy, previous transfusions, and known antibodies, without changing medicines on your own.
How should you understand the result?
The report states whether reactivity was detected and, when performed, how the antibody was characterised. Its presence alone does not define the clinical risk.
