What is this test?
AFP is a protein that is normally produced in large amounts during fetal development. In non-pregnant adults, it may be used in the evaluation and follow-up of certain liver and germ cell tumors.
Why might it be ordered?
- To monitor certain tumors of the liver, testicles or ovaries.
- As part of evaluation for increased risk or liver findings according to a specialized protocol.

A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How should you understand the result?
AFP naturally increases in pregnancy. In non-pregnant women, it can also increase in hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver recovery. A trend across consecutive measurements made with a comparable method is often more informative than a single value.
